Abstract
▪Research topic: This study examines the impact of revitalizing a local sports community on residents’ satisfaction, focusing on a Park Golf club in Jecheon City, a small urban area in Korea. By including both community participants (members) and non-participants (non-members) in the analysis, the research provides a comprehensive understanding of how sports community activation affects the broader resident population. ▪Research background: Many regional cities in Korea are facing population decline and aging, which lead to diminished community vitality and call for new strategies to enhance residents’ quality of life and satisfaction with living in the area. In this context, the activation of local community groups – such as recreational sports clubs – is gaining attention as a way to strengthen social networks and place attachment among residents, potentially contributing to community revitalization and population retention. Park Golf, in particular, is a rapidly growing leisure sport among seniors and serves as a prime example of a sports community that can promote social engagement and well-being of local residents. ▪Differences from prior research: Whereas previous studies have mainly focused on the effects of individual sports participation on personal health, leisure satisfaction, or social capital, this study is distinctive in that it investigates the effects of community-level sports group revitalization on the overall satisfaction of residents and their attitudes toward the community. In addition, by comparing members and non-members of the Park Golf community, this research explores the differential impacts of community involvement and rigorously tests the mediating and moderating mechanisms that have not been addressed in earlier studies. ▪Research method: A total of 412 valid responses were collected in Jecheon, including 301 park golf club members and 111 non-member residents. To verify the measurement tools’ reliability and construct validity, exploratory factor analysis and Cronbach’s α tests were conducted. Correlation analysis was then performed across all variables. Subsequently, the member subsample (n = 301) was used to conduct multiple regression analyses to test the proposed hypotheses. In addition, the SPSS PROCESS macro (version 4.2) was employed to analyze the mediating effects of life satisfaction and the moderating effects of demographic variables (e.g., length of residence) on the relationship between activity satisfaction, community attachment, and settlement intention. Indirect effects were tested using bootstrapped confidence intervals based on the recommended procedure. ▪Research results: The findings indicate that a higher level of local sports community revitalization significantly improves residents’ satisfaction with their community. Among community members, active participation in the Park Golf club enhanced their social bonds and attachment to the locale, leading to an increase in overall residential satisfaction. Consequently, members showed a stronger intention to continue living in the area and greater willingness to recommend their community to others. Meanwhile, even non-members indirectly benefited from the presence of a vibrant sports community, as it contributed to a more socially dynamic atmosphere and positive perception of the locality, which in turn had a favorable effect on their satisfaction. ▪Contribution points and expected effects: This study contributes to the literature by elucidating the role of recreational sports communities in a local context and empirically demonstrating that sports community revitalization can have a positive impact on residents’ satisfaction and intention to stay. The results highlight the importance of community-based approaches as an innovative solution to the population outflow problem in small cities. Theoretically, this research bridges sports sociology and community development fields, expanding the scope of study and improving our understanding of how community participation influences regional sustainability. Practically, the findings provide evidence for local policymakers that supporting local sports clubs for seniors can simultaneously enhance residents’ happiness and satisfaction and invigorate community vitality, ultimately contributing to population retention in the region.
