Ringer's solution is a balanced, isotonic saline solution used to replenish fluids and electrolytes in the body. In hospital settings, accurate monitoring of solution flow rates is critical to ensure patient safety, effective treatment, and operational efficiency. This paper presents the design, implementation, and evaluation of a reliable drop counter system for measuring the flow rate of Ringer’s solution administered to hospital patients. The proposed system utilizes infrared sensors to detect and count drops of the solution and estimates the total volume of infused fluid by calculating the drop count. To achieve accurate measurements, we developed an optimal infrared sensor arrangement, a robust signal processing circuit, and intuitive system software. The system issues an alarm if the drop rate deviates from the prescribed flow range, alerting both patients and healthcare staff. Additionally, it supports individualized flow rate settings to accommodate patient-specific needs. The performance of the proposed system was rigorously evaluated in a simulated environment, demonstrating its suitability for real-world deployment.
