Abstract

This study describes the educational effects of an academic mentoring program for economically disadvantaged, potentially gifted students in science. The participants in this study were 189 students, grade 7 to grade 9 who had been referred by their teachers as potentially gifted in mathematics and sciences. These students participated to 3 days science camp, and 4 hours academic mentoring program every other weekends over 5 months. To find out the educational effects of the mentoring program, the students’ self-esteem and attitudes toward science were examined by pre- and post-test. Students show improvement in self-esteem and attitude toward science with statistically significance. Especially 8th grade female and 9th grade male students showed statistically significant increase in self-esteem. All students showed significant increase in attitudes toward sciences after the program. We concluded that this mentoring program had educational effects on students’ self-esteem and positive attitude toward science. Recommended practices were suggested in discussion.
