Abstract

This study systematically reviewed the interactions between over-the-counter (OTC) nutritional supplements and steroid therapy in patients with oral mucosal diseases, focusing on their clinical implications. Based on domestic and international literature, the review analyzed how specific supplements may influence steroid pharmacokinetics, immune modulation, oral mucosal health, and electrolyte balance. Substances such as licorice, St. John’s Wort, and grapefruit were found to alter steroid metabolism, potentially impacting therapeutic efficacy. Immune-stimulating supplements like Echinacea, ginseng, and Astragalus may counteract the immunosuppressive effects of steroids. High doses of vitamin C and vitamin A may exert direct effects on the oral mucosa, while electrolyte-related supplements including calcium, magnesium, and sodium could increase the risk of imbalances during steroid use. Although supplements such as zinc, vitamin D, and coenzyme Q10 have been explored as adjunct treatments for oral lichen planus, current evidence remains insufficient to support their effectiveness. These findings highlight the need for healthcare providers to thoroughly assess patients’ supplement use and provide guidance on safe and appropriate usage during steroid therapy. Further research is needed to clarify the specific interactions between individual nutritional supplements and steroids.
