Abstract
This study aims to investigate the effect of socioeconomics status including educational attainment on obesity in Korea. To fulfill the purpose of this research, raw data from the 4th and 5th wave of National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey is employed for people aged 20 to 69 in 2010-2015. Total 23,609 men and women were dealt with in this research for the relation between socioeconomic status and obesity in urban and rural areas in Korea. Main findings from this research are as follows. Firstly, obesity in urban area is related with socioeconomic status such as educational attainment and household income. Urban residents are also affected by a health factor such as stress in obesity whereas obesity in rural areas is not related to socioeconomic status. Secondly, this research investigated gender differentials in the effect of socioeconomic factors on obesity in both urban and rural areas. Socioeconomic status seems to have no or very weak relations with obesity for men in both urban and rural areas. However, socioeconomic factors are clearly related to obesity for women in both urban and rural areas. The higher educational attainment for women is, the lower the risk of obesity is in urban and rural areas. Age, marital status, education, household income and health-related factors are very significantly related to obesity for female urban residents whereas only education was significant in bringing differential obesity for female rural residents in Korea.
