Abstract

This article aims to understand the significance of transmitting the keun-gut (a large-scale shamanic ritual) in the shamanistic traditions of Jeju Island. Shamanistic traditions encompass a wide range of rituals, dangol believers, shamans, villages, and more that have been passed down over a long time. The keun-gut is a type of ritual performed on a larger scale within households. In the past, there has been a tendency to discuss the keun-gut in a somewhat limited context. As a result, there haven't been many attempts to specifically examine how the keun-gut has been practically transmitted within the shamanistic tradition of Jeju. This article is divided into four sections. First, a general overview is provided of the scholarship on the Jeju keun-gut ritual, focusing on its significance and characteristics. Second, the relationship between the Jeju shamanistic traditions and the keun-gut is examined by studying the social presence of individual attendee residents and various shamanistic rituals performed throughout their lifetime. Third, there is reflection upon the uncertain conditions of transmitting the practice in the changing landscape of Jeju’s shamanistic tradition and the gradual disappearance of simbang (shamans) and dangol (believers). Lastly, transmission activities related to Jeju keun-gut as intangible cultural heritage are explored. The keun-gut has played a role as a stage for the transmission of Jeju Island’s history and folklore through the ages, vividly showcasing the Jeju language. It has now evolved to be recognized as cultural content and is even utilized as a resource in the fields of culture, the arts, and cultural industries. Transmitting the keun-gut is akin to passing on the entirety of Jeju culture. Given that the keun-gut embodies Jeju Island’s past, present, and future, it is imperative that it is duly acknowledged and appreciated.
