Effects on Structured Dance/Movement Therapy with Emphasizing Ballroom Dance for the Satisfaction Levels of Self-Concept and Social Relationship of Schizophrenia

This is a comparative experimental study to delineate effects of structured dance/ movement therapy for increasing the satisfaction levels of self-concept and social relationship with schizophrenia. Subjects are 56 chronical schizophrenia who have regularly attended psychotherapy for rehabilitation at daytime psycho-healthy centers in Seoul area. Twenty subjects are involved in a structured dance/movement therapy with emphasizing ballroom dance, and 14 subjects are joined in a non-structured dance/movement therapy. Twenty subjects are also included in a control group. Total 8 weeks experimental sessions are conducted with pre-post tests. Results of the study demonstrate that the subjects' self-concept and social relationship in the a emphasizing ballroom dance structured dance/movement therapy are significantly increased to compare that of non-structured dance/movement therapy or that of control group. The results indicate that a structured dance/movement therapy with emphasizing ballroom dance can be a more effective method to promote satisfaction levels of self-concepts and social relationship for person with schizophrenia then that of a non-structured one.
