Abstract
This paper studies the Water Splashing Festival of the Dai people, a minority resident in the Xishuangbanna region of Yunnan Province, China. In this paper, I investigate the expanding process of the festival from that of the ethnic minorities in China's southwestern frontier to one of China's major festivals, nicknamed as the "Carnival of the East" today, and how the nationality of the "Chinese" festival is conferred to it. This article also examines how the Han people consume the exoticism of the ethnic minorities and simultaneously how the festival escapes the national ideological discourse of oneness through being exotic and minor. I chart the Water Splashing Festival’s main programs and their meanings, and analyze the texts dealing with the Water Splashing Festival in elementary school textbooks, and consider how the image of the festival has been formed and anchored in the local press and the national-wide media in China. Water Splashing Festival, derived from traditional Thai culture, is now an independent festival as one of China's numerous festivals after the establishment of People's Republic of China in 1949 and the settlement of border between China and Myanmar. However, as the festival has emerged as one of China's popular tour attractions since the 2000s, it has been consumed as a mysterious kind of exotic experiences for urban middle-class Han Chinese men, who are major customers of the festival. This article concludes that by these conflicting demand and viewpoints the Water Splashing Festival has its contemporary dual identity within China.
