Abstract

Music should be discussed and understood in the political and social context from which it arises. Nationalism prevailed Europe in the nineteenth century through the French Revolution, the Napoleonic War, and the German unification processes. During that time, music played important roles in the nation-building processes, providing and strengthening political identities of the European nations. Nationalist musicians created or recreated national attributes and emphasized a longevity of nation. Particularly, they introduced folk melodies and rhythms into their music composition utilizing national myths, histories and literatures as sources of inspiration. The roles of nationalist musicians were characteristically influential in Germany and Russia.
