<인간의 조건>에 나타난 노동, 작업, 행위의 구별은 맑스의 노동 개념의 비판에서 비롯되었다. 아렌트가 제시하고 있는 정치적 범주들이 이론적으로 타당할 수 있으려면 맑스와의 논쟁은 피해갈 수 없다. 아렌트의 맑스에 대한 비판은 크게 두 가지이다. 첫째, 노동과 작업의 혼동, 둘째, 인간과 자연의 영원한 물질대사로서 노동과 이 노동으로부터의 해방이 그것이다. 첫 번째 쟁점과 관련해서 아렌트는 인간의 욕구나 필요에 복무하는 노동과 욕구나 필요에 저항해서 객관적으로 지속하는 세계를 건설하는 작업 간의 구분을 중시했지만, 맑스는 두 활동을 중첩시키고 있다. 두 번째 쟁점과 관련해서 아렌트는 맑스의 자유 개념은 하나의 이데올로기이며 공산사회에서 실현된 자유는 진정한 자유가 아니라고 비판한다. 그러나 맑스의 유적 본질의 개념은 필연성 속에서 자유의 실현 가능성을 보여준다. 두 사람의 관점의 차이는 왜 발생하는가? 이는 근본적으로 서로 다른 방법에서 비롯된다. 개념 간의 상호 침투를 허용하는 맑스의 변증법(Dialectics)과 달리 아렌트는 개념 간의 엄격한 구획을 지니는 방법으로서 구별(Distinction)을 채택하고 있다. 아렌트의 방법은 개념들의 독자성을 보호할 수 있는 틀을 제공하지만, 현실과 개념 간의 관계를 보다 잘 반영해줄 틀을 지니고 있지 않다는 점에서 한계를 노출한다. 이 글은 아렌트의 맑스 비판의 타당성을 분석함으로써 현대 사회에서 노동과 필연성이 공적인 가치를 지닐 수 있는 가능성, 즉 필연성을 위한 노동이 그 자체로 자유로운 활동이 될 수 있는 가능성을 모색해 볼 것이다.
Abstract
The distinction between Labor, Work, and Action in Human Condition originated from the criticism of the concept of Labor by Marx. Arrent's debate with Marx cannot be avoided for Arendt’s political categories to be theoretically valid. Arendt's criticism of Marx is largely twofold. First, the confusion between Labor and Work, and second, Labor, and Freedom from this labor as eternal matabolism between humans and nature. Regarding the first issue, Arendt emphasized the distinction between Labor serving human needs or desires and Work of building a world that objectively persists against desires or needs, but Marx overlaps the two activities. Regarding the second issue, Arendt criticizes that the concept of Freedom in Marx is an ideology, and Freedom realized in communist society is not true freedom. However, the concept of the nature of the species-being of Marxs shows the feasibility of Freedom in necessity. Why does the difference in view between the two occur? This essentially comes from different method. Unlike Marx's ‘Dialectics’, which allows mutual penetration between concepts, Arendt adopts ‘Distinction’ as a method of having a strict division between concepts. Arendt's method provides a framework to protect the uniqueness of concepts, but exposes limitations in that it does not have a framework that better reflects the relationship between reality and concepts. By analyzing the validity of Arendt's criticism of Marx, this article will explore the possibility that Labor and Necessity can have public value in modern society, that is, that Labor for necessity can become a free activity in itself.
