본 연구는 20세기 아르헨티나의 가장 중요한 극작가 오스발도 드라군의 『전해야할 이야기들 Historias para ser contadas』의 주제와 연극 양식의 상응관계를 통하여 새로운 기법의 표현이 어떻게 작품의 주제와 어우러지고 있는지를 살펴보고 있다. 이 작품에서 드라군은 다양한 연극양식을 이용하여 비인간화된 산업자본주의 사회의 위선성과 폭력성을 고발하고 있다. 『전해야할 이야기들』에 수록된 4편의 단편들은 현대산업사회가 야기하는 공동체 사회 붕괴, 비인간화, 물질만능주의, 타인에 대한 무관심, 가난, 경제와 도덕적 선택과의 관계, 타인과의 관계, 인간의 자존심 상실 등의 주제를 말하고 있다. 그러나 이 작품의 중요성은 현대산업사회의 부정적인 측면을 고발하는 주제가 아니다. 이런 메시지가 새로운 것이 아니기 때문이다. 중요한 점은 오스발도 드라군이 이런 주제를 새로운 양식으로 형상화했다는 점이다. 드라군은 중세 서사시의 효과와 해설자 등장, 암시적인 음악의 사용, 배우와 등장인물의 구분 짓기, 의도적인 일인 다역, 연극이 현실을 모방한다는 환상성 파괴 등의 서사극의 다양한 기법들과 부조리 기법, 인간의 동물화와 동물의 인간화를 통한 그로테스크 요소 등의 다양한 기법을 통하여 앞서 알아본 주제를 효과적으로 형상화하고 있다. 이런 차원에서 오스발도 드라군의 『전해야할 이야기들』의 새롭지 않은 주제는 새로운 양식을 통해 효과적으로 관객들에게 전달된다고 볼 수 있다.
Abstract
This study investigates the correspondence of theme and style of Osvaldo Dragún’s Historias para ser contadas. In this play Osvaldo Dragún discloses the hypocrisy and violence of the inhumane capitalism industry society. The themes of Historias para ser contadas are social collapse, dehumanization, mammonism, indifference about others, poverty, relation of economy and ethical choice, relationship with others, loss of human pride, etc. But the importance of this work is not these themes of exposing the contradictions in modern society. Because this kind of messages is not new nor original. In this work the more important thing is that Dragú́n represents these themes through the new experimental styles of the modern theatre, for example, the effect of medieval epics, the techniques of theatre of the absurd, the grotesque techniques like animalization of human being or humanization of animal, the epic theatre’s techniques like appearance of narrator, use of suggestive music, differentiation of actors and characters, destruction of fantasy, etc. In this point of view Osvaldo Dragún’s Historias para ser contadas shows audience the derivative themes with the new and original techniques of theatre.
