Abstract
This paper examines the structure and meaning of linguistic expressions by analyzing sentences composed of the same vocabulary but exhibiting different structures. From a cognitive linguistics perspective, such sentences represent different construals of the same conceptual content. The French adjective indispensable exhibits semantic differences depending on whether it takes an infinitive or a noun phrase as its subject. Similarly, the French adjective courageux, when used with a finite clause as its subject, and courageux, when used with a noun phrase as its subject, are polysemous and result in distinct meanings in specific contexts. The goal of this study is to systematically investigate the kinds of conceptual scenes encoded by these differing grammatical constructions, to reveal the specificity of the construals they each provide, and to demonstrate how those construals are reflected in linguistic form. By doing so, the paper highlights the relationship between grammar and meaning, showing that semantic contrasts and grammatical differences are interconnected. These differences are explained through underlying semantic structures, which make the characteristics of grammatical constructions more apparent. Ultimately, this analysis contributes to a deeper understanding of how grammatical structures shape meaning and how linguistic forms encode particular ways of conceptualizing the same content.
