Abstract

Maggie Gee’s The Ice People (1998) redefines all humans and nonhumans in the Anthropocene as ‘climatic beings’ who both affect and respond to climate. This paper explores the author’s feminist science studies approach to climate science and environmental discourse, portraying ‘climate science in the making’ that considers the plurality of scientific practices, the relationships between scientists, the public, and industry, and social variables including gender. Corresponding to feminist science theorists such as Donna Haraway, Karen Barad, and Isabelle Stengers, Gee engages readers in the dynamic and complex processes through which knowledge of climate science is produced. At the core of this novel lies Sandra Harding’s insight that discrimination within science is tied to male scientists’ gender identities, which reveals that Saul’s gendered biases as a male scientist are directly linked to the toxic masculinity manifested in his everyday life. By examining this Anthropocene novel set in an ice age, this paper reflects on how humanity has grappled with the competing claims of global cooling and global warming, contemplating the intricate connection between climate science and socio-political structures. Furthermore, it suggests Gee desires to reconstruct a new feminine heroic narrative by restoring ‘the whole story’ of climate change without missing elements while deconstructing the masculine hero narrative.
