Abstract

This paper follows the growth of the sugar industry and the change in the natural landscape from the late 18th century to the early 20th century in Cuba. For the review, several points are chosen; the domestic and international political and economic situation surrounding Cuba's sugar industry, the expansion of the sugar industry on the island of Cuba, and changes in the forest landscape. During the colonial period, the sugar industry was examined about the domestic and international political situation of the Spanish Empire, the Haitian revolution, the black labor force, and the influence of the United States. After Cuba's independence, more than anything else, the sugar industry grew with intensive investment from the United States. At that time, investment by Americans was concentrated in the undeveloped eastern part of Cuba rather than the existing cultivated western and central regions. The reason is that finding an area where new technology can be directly applied was cheaper than replacing the old one, and the price of undeveloped land was cheaper than that of cultivated land. It was also because they thought it could achieve higher productivity in less cultivated nature land. As a result, infrastructure for the sugar industry, such as sugar factories and railways, was actively built in Camaguey and far eastern areas, a forested area that was relatively dense compared to the western part of Cuba before independence. In the process, the landscape of eastern Cuba is replaced by large plantation areas and sugar factories from dense forests of various species and savanna areas with palm trees and shrubs.
