초록
This study starts with exploring whether super mirror neurons, which very few scholars have started researching recently, can take on a vaccine-like role to prevent contact with the demon within ourselves. A “super mirror neuron” is another function and variation of mirror neuron evolved to “control and modulate” the imitation and empathizing activities of “mirror neuron.” Mirror and super mirror neurons operate as an integrated mechanism to promote or inhibit empathy and imitation, and they further allow us to be infected by evil or develop immunity to it. Understanding this mechanism to activate it in a beneficial direction may become the most effective approach to avoid coming in contact with the demon. This paper employs the integrated neurological mechanism of mirror and super mirror neurons as a working principle to trace the evil deeds of imperialism and the discourse justifying them, particularly the manner of being infected with fanatical mass delusion and fear called “barbarian hysteria” in J. M. Coetzee's Waiting for the Barbarians. The magistrate, who is the protagonist and narrator in this work, forms an antibody for the virus of the society's harmful notions and evil deeds. Through his narrative of purification, this novel presents the most effective operational method of the (super) mirror neuron system, that is, the optimal vaccine for protecting a community, which adjusts or manages the ignition button of good and evil. In this sense, Waiting for the Barbarians can be assessed as proving the significance of neuroethics in Coetzee's literary work.
