2020년 과천 국립현대미술관에 기증된 ‘이건희 컬렉션’의 일부인 1,400여 점의 미술품에는 카탈루냐 출신의 화가 살바도르 달리의 1940년 작품인 〈육아낭이 있는 켄타우로스 가족〉이 포함되어 있다. 이 그림은 그 중요도에 비해 많이 알려지지 않았다. 〈켄타우로스 가족〉에 대한 최초의 해석은 르네상스적 균형미와 조화, 그리고 고전주의로 회귀하려는 화가의 결심에 주목한다. 그러나 이러한 해석은 없어야 할 육아낭이 그림 속의 켄타우로스에게 구태여 표현된 이유나, 이들이 ‘가족’ 단위로 등장하는 이유에 관해 충분한 설명을 제시하지 못한다. 이 논문은 기존 해석의 공백을 채우고, 무엇보다도 ‘육아낭이 있는 켄타우로스’라는 이례적인 도상이 작품이 제작된 시기, 즉 2차 세계대전을 피해 달리가 미국 망명 생활을 시작한1940년을 전후하여서만 사용된 이유를 추적하는 데에 목표를 둔다. 이 맥락에서 달리가 같은 시기 자기에 관한 글쓰기에 몰두하였고, 이때의 텍스트로부터 해석의 실마리를 찾을 수 있다는 점이 특히 주목을 요한다. 요컨대 〈켄타우로스 가족〉 은 1930년대까지 고수한 초현실주의적 색채와 결별하고 다시 태어나겠다는 선언인 동시에, 같은 시기의 글까지 종합적으로 고려한다면, 무엇보다도 어린 시절부터 유령처럼 따라다닌 근원적인 트라우마로부터 벗어나 새롭게 삶을 시작하겠다는 화가의 선언으로 2차 세계대전 이후의 달리를 이해하는 데에 중요한 열쇠를 제공하는 작품이라 할 것이다. 나아가 글과 그림을 같은 층위에 두고 그 상호적 관계에 초점을 둠으로써 달리의 작품 세계에서 글쓰기가 점하는 위치에 대한 관점을 재고하는 것 또한 이 글이 추구하는 바의 하나이다.
Abstract
Among the collection of the late ex-president of Samsung, Lee Kun-Hee, donated to the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Arts at Gwacheon, Korea, in 2020, was a painting of Salvador Dalí. Known as Family of Marsupial Centaurs, the 1940 work of the Catalan painter hitherto remains relatively less-known, quite contrary to its significance in the painter’s career. Earliest interpretations of the Marsupial Centaurs focus on its Renaissance sense of symmetry and composition and on Dalí’s determination to turn to the classic. Such analysis, however, fails to explain why the centaurs are depicted as marsupials and in a family, unlike the description in classical mythology. This study therefore aims to fill the void of interpretation and to explore why this highly unusual iconography was created and employed exclusively in the years 1940 and 1941, when Dalí was in exile in the United States to avoid World War II consuming his homeland. That Dalí was obsessed with writing about himself in this period is also notable, for in his contemporary texts reside clues to decipher the enigmatic painting. In short, in Family of Marsupial Centaurs, the painter manifests his break with the Surrealist era, namely between the 1920s and the 1930s, his turn to Classicism, and above all, his break from the trauma that haunted him since his youth. The painting thus provides a key to understand Dalí’s postwar oeuvre. By examining the interaction, conversation, or intertextuality between Dalí’s paintings and writings, this paper also aims to shed light on the significance of the painter’s literary works in the field of Dalinian studies.
