Abstract
Reducing the “social handicap” or psychological barriers toward persons with disabilities largely depends on improving public perceptions shaped by social groups. Religious communities play a significant role in social welfare and disability welfare and exert considerable influence on disability awareness. This study therefore examines the religious and ideological factors that affect disability perceptions in Korean society and investigates how Daesoon Jinrihoe’s view of disabilities compares with existing perspectives. Perceptions regarding disabilities differ across religious traditions depending on denominational characteristics, historical contexts, and scholarly viewpoints. Considering that doctrinal ideas in contemporary Korean religions can contribute to prejudice and negative perceptions of disabilities, this article provides an overview of the societal background that has shaped prevailing perceptions of disabilities. Although recent efforts—led by theologians and scholars of religion—have sought to reexamine traditional views, address distorted interpretations, and propose new perspectives aligned with modern notions of the rights of the disable, it remains undeniable that histories of discrimination and discriminatory elements embedded in religious doctrines have influenced perceptions of persons with disabilities. In Daesoon Thought, the causes of disability are explained through concepts such as “all under Heaven being afflicted,” the absence of the Dao, grievances and grudges, past karmic retribution, and moral transgressions of the mind; these can be overcome through Cheonjigongsa (the Reordering Works of Heaven and Earth), Haewon-sangsaeng (the Resolution of Grievances for Mutual Beneficence), and the restoration of moral virtue. Since the core value in Daesoon Thought is the mind, physical disabilities themselves are not considered a basis for prejudice. The Canonical Scripture also notes that individuals with visual and physical disabilities participated in Cheonjigongsa, indicating an absence of discriminatory views and a positive stance toward the involvement of people with disabilities.
