초록

This essay examines the performativity of the 1575 Kenilworth entertainments, with a special emphasis on the extent to which these, the most outstanding Elizabethan progress entertainments, relied on the material structure, social memories, and physical geography of Kenilworth. In particular, I discuss two Arthurian pageants, the most elaborate spectacles of the Kenilworth entertainments, analyzing the ways in which space played a pivotal role in articulating a nationalistic agenda. The analysis includes such topics as: the cultural significance and social memories of Kenilworth; how the Earl of Leicester utilized the history, architecture, and landscape of Kenilworth in the Arthurian pageants he staged; the 1279 Round Table at Kenilworth hosted by Roger Mortimer, 1st Baron of Wigmore, as a subtext of Leicester’s 1575 Arthurian entertainments; how Kenilworth made an important argument that could serve both the Queen and Leicester in what seems to be a fairly reciprocal way. In so doing, I attempt to cast new light on the ways in which the Queen and Leicester’s political companionship is mediated by spatial practices.
