Abstract
This article offers an analysis of Wedekind’s Drama The Marquis von Keith, which hasn't been introduced properly in Korea. The analysis focuses on three aspects: The dualistic contrast of human character, an egoistic, pleasure seeking character and an altruistic, moralistic character with a sense of duty, which was already dealt in his early drama Frühlings Erwachen (Spring Awakening) and is now continued in this drama and personified in the figures of Keith and Scholz. But as the drama proceeds, the grouping changes: to outside society and bourgeois society. The emphasis moves from individual to social contrast, which reveals the capitalistic system of the bourgeois society. The second aspect, which is new in this drama, deals with art and the art industry in Germany at the turn of the century. The rapid development of the economy since Bismarck’s period, increased the economic volume and accumulated capital, but culture and intellectual capacity could not keep pace. To meet the demand of the newly rich bourgeois, art became superficial and commercialized. Keith is the one who grasps the possibility to make business with art by mediating between the artists and art consumers. The central aspect of this drama is the social and economical analysis of the deep structure of Wilhelm society. Establishing a “Nymph palace” - a place where art and entertainment can be combined to meet the needs of new consumers - the socalled duke of Keith, from the lower outside class tries to enter the bourgeois society and does not shrink from swindling. But the bourgeois society does not allow him to become a member. As soon as success is within view, the capitalistic bourgeois class grasps the project to make business for itself and gets rid of him.
