Abstract

This study analyzes the 2020 Nike Japan advertisement “You Can’t Stop Us” to explore how anti-Korean discourse and racial ideologies are visualized and contested within Japanese society. Featuring a Black mixed-race girl, a Korean school student, and a Japanese student, the commercial portrays experiences of discrimination and solidarity within everyday spaces such as schools. While the campaign was part of Nike’s global anti-racism initiative, it provoked polarized reactions in Japan— praised by some as a courageous social statement, yet condemned by others as foreign interference in domestic issues. This controversy reveals the deeply internalized structure of racial gaze in Japan, where racism is often perceived as an external problem rather than a domestic one. By examining Nike Japan’s cultural localization strategy, this study investigates how global brand activism interacts with Japan’s monoethnic discourse and how the representation of Zainichi visualizes the boundaries between exclusion and recognition. Ultimately, it argues that the campaign exposes the limits and potential of global capital’s engagement with racial sensitivity in contemporary Japan.
