Abstract

Countries utilizing nuclear energy are striving to develop deep geological disposal technology for high-level radioactive waste. In Korea, where nuclear energy is important for power generation, active research related to geological disposal is being conducted. The design and operation of underground research facilities require site selection for a repository, design of a disposal system, assessment of the safety and stability of the repository, and understanding of the complex thermo-hydro-mechanical- chemical (THMC) coupling behavior over tens of thousands of years. In this study, a keyword analysis was conducted on the research papers related to radioactive waste disposal published since 2000. In addition, the current status of research on the THMC coupling behavior was investigated to suggest research directions for the deep geological disposal of high-level radioactive wastes.
