顏文樑(1893-1988)의 회화사상과 근대 서양화풍 수용

19세기 말에 중국은 阿片戰爭 등으로부터 비롯된 격동기를 맞이하면서 근대의 서막을 올리게 되었다. 이 시기의 서구 문명에 대한 도입과 자극은 문화, 예술계 전반에 걸쳐서 큰 영향을 끼치게 되었다. 林風眠, 徐悲鴻, 劉海粟, 顏文樑 등의 화가들은 근현대 미술에 있어 두드러지는 업적을 남긴 선구자들로 서구의 화풍을 수용하여 융합을 꾀했으며, 커다란 반향을 불러일으켰다. 동시대의 林風眠, 徐悲鴻, 劉海粟에 관해서는 중국과 국내, 서구에서까지 많은 연구가 되어왔음에도 불구하고 顏文樑에 대해서는 중국에서조차 체계적이고 깊은 연구가 이루어져 오지 못했다. 그의 업적이 컸음에도, 그 특색이나 독창적인 성격들이 잘 부각되지 못했다고 볼 수 있다. 본 논문에서는 顏文樑의 회화에서 보여지는 특성과 그의 회화사상에 대해 조망하고자 한다. 그는 서구의 사실주의 영향을 받아 자연적 진실의 표출을 강조하였으며, 투시학, 해부학, 색채학 등 과학적인 이론을 활용하는 것이 필요함을 주장하였다. 또한 그의 유화 속에서 서구의 인상주의 기법 역시 수용하였음을 알 수 있는데, 빛에 따라 움직이는 색채의 변화 속에서 자연을 묘사하였으며, 색채의 순간적 효과를 통해 실제 세계를 정확하고 객관적으로 묘사하고자 하였다. 또한 그는 미술교육자로서 후학을 양성하는데에도 힘을 쏟았다. 顏文樑은 蘇州美專을 건립하였으며 기본적인 체계와 내용을 정립하였다. 서구의 사실주의와 과학적 이론을 기반으로 한 실용주의 교육에 전념하였으며, 프랑스 유학 후에는 서구에서 가져온 석고상과 자료 등을 교육에 활용하였다. 徐悲鴻의 초청으로 中央大學 예술 부문의 학부장을 겸직하기도 하였다. 본 연구에서는 顏文樑의 회화사상을 고찰해보고 그의 회화적 특성을 시기별, 요소별로 분류해 살펴보고자 한다. 비록 그의 업적은 동시대의 유명 화가들에 비해 부각되지 않았다하더라도, 중국 근현대 시기에 있어 서양 화법과 이론의 수용을 통해 추구하였던 中西融合의 정신은 후대에도 많은 영향을 끼쳤으며 선구적인 역할을 하였다.
Abstract
In the history of early 20th century Chinese painting's encounter with Western art, as the Chinese acknowledged traditional painting as the essential progressive elements in Western painting, they discovered in Western realist painting elements such as volume, form, texture, space, perspective, light, etc. that were lacking in traditional Chinese painting. Some painters- Xu Beihong, Liu Haisu, Lin Fengmian, and Yan Wenliang- tried in their own manner to utilize what they had learnt from Western visual sources in the task of modernizing Chinese painting. Though they all played an important role in Chinese painting, Yan Wenliang is not highly evaluated and as compared with Xu Beihong, Liu Haisu, Lin Fengmian. I think he is very significant in Chinese modern painting, so I take on this study. I discuss the works and achievements of Yan Wenliang, his thoughts and characteristics in painting. Yan Wenliang, who occupies an important position in Chinese modern art history and art education history, is the outstanding Chinese artist and art educator in twentieth century. He raised the banner of realism with Xu Beihong, tried to accept new tecnique and the way of looking at things from Western realism. He established Su Zhou specialized art college based on practical arts into characteristics in school-running, tried to pursue realism style in Chinese painting. Yan Wenliang was also interested in impressionism. He captured the momentary and transient effects of sunlight by painting outdoors as impressionist did. He portrayed overall visual effects and used short brush strokes of mixed and pure unmixed colour to achieve an effect of intense colour vibration. Besides, Yan Wenliang tried to use scientific theories like perspective, anatomy, chromatics in his paintings. I examine closely the paintings and thought of Yan Wenliang to be reevaluated his achivement in this study, and I discover his significance in Chinese modern painting.
