Abstract
I studied the compilation of Veritable Records of King Youngjo in early Jungjo’s reign in relation to the political situation, and the business procedure of the Office of Veritable Records which was a temporally established for compiling Veritable Records and was subordinated to the Office of Spring & Autumn. First, I focused on the change of customs in the time of compilation. In tradition, there was a rule to compile the Veritable Records of the preceding King after the mourning-end(卒哭) that was a phase of the Royal Funeral(凶禮). But Jongjo drove the idea of Literati-Governance to concrete his political background and compiled a book, the Records of Lighting Justice, before the compilation of Veritable Records. The reasons why the change happened were the weakening of the position of Court-Diarists and the emergency of the new historical compilation, the Records of Daily Reflection. On the other hand, after the establishment of the office of Veritable Records, Jungjo changed the name of official posts and intervened deeply into the procedure of compilation. Especially, in the case of sensitive period such as the time of Crown Prince, he entrusted his nearby person with the compilation. And I surveyed the whole procedure of compilation on the basis of the Ritual Register which recorded the process from the abstraction of historical material to the maceration. As a result, I find two aspects of the Veritable Records studies, the one the politic of the Veritable Records and the other the secrecy-openness of it which we have implicitly avoided problems to confront. However, it will be inevitable to accept these two aspects as the characteristics of Veritable Records for full understanding of it.
