청년기 자살생각에 대한 보호요인으로서의 사랑과 자아존중감 -괴테의 『젊은 베르테르의 슬픔』을 중심으로-

본 연구는 독일의 문학가 괴테의 1774년 作 『젊은 베르테르의 슬픔』을 중심으로 청년기 자살생각에 대한 보호요인으로서의 사랑과 자아존중감의 직간접적 사례를 깊이 있게 탐구하였다. 청년기 발달과업 획득과정에서 삶의 특정한 과제와 변화에 잘 적응하기 위한 요인으로 사랑과 자아존중감은 타인과의 친밀한 관계 형성을 통해 정체성을 확립하고 사회문제 해결능력을 향상시키는 데 중요한 역할을 한다. 이 문학작품은 친구의 약혼녀에 대한 괴테 자신의 실연경험과 친구의 자살을 소재로 쓴 서간체 형식의 소설이다. 감수성이 풍부한 청년의 이야기를 그리고 있고, 괴테를 국제적으로 유명하게 만든 이 작품은 자살을 소재로 하고 있어서 베르테르를 따라 자살하는 사건이 아직도 잇따르고 있다. 텍스트 내용을 분석한 결과, 사랑과 자아존중감은 청년기 자살생각에 대한 보호요인으로 작용할 가능성이 매우 높다는 것을 알 수 있었다. 이러한 결과를 토대로 청년기 자살생각에 대한 예방적 보호요인으로 사랑과 자아존중감을 강화시킬 수 있는 방안을 논의하였다.
Abstract
This study conducts an in-depth examination of love and self-esteem as protective factors against suicidal thoughts in adolescence, focusing on direct and indirect examples drawn from Goethe's 1774 novel, The Sorrows of Young Werther. In the course of adolescent developmental tasks, love and self-esteem are crucial for establishing identity and improving problem-solving abilities through the formation of intimate relationships. Goethe's novel, written in an epistolary form, is based on his personal experience of unrequited love for a friend’s fiancée and his friend’s subsequent suicide. The novel, which brought Goethe international fame, centers on the sensitive inner life of a young man and continues to inspire imitative suicides, a phenomenon known as the "Werther effect." The analysis reveals that love and self-esteem appear to function as protective factors against suicidal thoughts in adolescence. Based on these findings, the study discusses approaches for strengthening love and self-esteem as preventive factors against suicidal thoughts in youth.
