Abstract

In this study, we deploy Freudian and Lacanian psychoanalytic theoretical paradigms to discuss the anti-human and de-subjected character who is not 'one of us'. Something happens when the de-subjected man endeavors to behave as part of our community. In fictional relations, something similar happens when a reader finds the living dead or the corpse that would not die. The reader who finds it may be surprised, since it has been supposed to be a living man who lives in a real place before the revealed point. In other words, the automatic reaction of every reader is a shock because he/she finds him/herself literally "between two death". A real place to be a place between two death and a living man who has been supposed as such to be a living dead or a corpse who do not know his death give a reader the effect which is called "the uncanny". In short, as the case of 'one of us' we said before, we have the wrong object (a living dead or a corpse that would not die) in the right place (perfectly real place where we live in). In this viewpoint, we suggest that Choi in-ho and Kim young-ha may be the most famous korean novelists who have controlled this uncanny effect very well by using these anti-human and de-subjected characters. Especially Choi in-ho has described the living man who is finally determined as a corpse, while Kim young-ha has dealt with a man who is characterized by drive which intend to continue its path to and from the goal. For instance, Choi's character in 'a room for others' is the dead man who do not know he was dead, and Kim's character in 'a ship loaded with treasures' functions as a programmed automaton who persists in his demand and pursues his goal with no trace of compromise or hesitation. The horror of this figure consists precisely in these facts.
