한국 셰익스피어 르네상스 Part II (2012~2018)

Abstract

Korean theatre has been experiencing an unprecedented Shakespeare boom from 1990 to present. During this period, 742 Shakespeare productions were performed in Korea; 63 foreign Shakespeare productions met Korean audiences and 679 Korean Shakespeare productions were produced. Further, many Shakespearean productions including Oh Tae-suk’s Romeo and Juliet, The Tempest, Yang Jung-ung’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Han Tae-sook’s Lady Macbeth, Wong Young-oh’s Hamlet from the East, and Kim Myeong-kon’s King Uru, Kim Nak-hyeong’s Macbeth, which received significant successes at home, were invited abroad and found positive responses from international audiences as well as from professional reviewers. Moreover, they were given many awards in various kinds of international theatre festivals. Korean Shakespeare can be truly said to meet Renaissance. In 2015, I published my own book entitled Korean Shakespeare Renaissance, which dealt with performance data from 1990 to 2011. Incidentally, Korean Shakespeare Renaissance is still in active development. Especially, two anniversaries of Shakespeare in 2014 and 2016 rebooted the Shakespeare boom in Korea; 284 Korean Shakespeare productions were performed from 2012 to 2018 while 395 Shakespeare productions were for 22 years from 1990 to 2011. In the 2010s, however, Shakespeare seems not only to increase drastically the number of the performances, but to permeate into Korean pop culture including TV dramas, movies, cafes, and commercial goods, as well as theatre. This paper aims at analysing and introducing the second part of Korean Shakespeare Renaissance, by using the detailed list of Korean Shakespeare productions from 2012 to 2018.
