소설 『오베라는 남자』에서 매체 전환된 영화의 내러티브 분석

스웨덴의 대중소설들이 최근 주목을 받으면서 국내의 독자들에게 널리 알려지게 된 작가와 작품들 가운데 무명 작가였던 프레드릭 바크만(Fredrik Backman)과 그의 데뷔소설 『오베라는 남자(En man som heter Ove)』(2012)를 대표적으로 꼽을 수 있다. 무엇보다도 이 작품은 감독 한네스 홀름(Hannes Holm) 에 의해 영화로의 매체 전환이 이루어지면서 소설뿐 아니라 영화에서도 크게 성공을 거두었다. 국내에 소설(2015)과 영화(2016)가 비슷한 시기에 소개되면서 더욱 주목을 받았는데 본 연구에서는 『오베라는 남자』가 소설에서 영화로 매체 전환이 이루어지면서 영화의 내러티브의 구조에 어떠한 변화가 이루어졌으며, 이러한 내러티브의 구조 변화가 영화가 성공할 수 있었던 주요 배경이 되었는지 분석해보고자 한다. 특히 흥행하고 있는 많은 영화 가운데 ‘히어로 무비’로 불리며 영웅서사의 3막 구조를 유지하는 경우를 보게 되는데, 영화 <오베라는 남자>도 배트맨이나 슈퍼맨같은 영웅과는 결이 다른 주인공으로 일상생활에서 있을 법한 일상적인, 소시민적 영웅으로 다루어지고 있다는 점이다. 본 연구에서는 이러한 영웅서사의 구조적 측면이 지니고 있는 특징을 통해 관객의 공감을 끌어내는 성공적 특징을 지녔다는 가정하에 ‘영웅여정’ 개념을 통해 정립된 캠벨(Campbell), 보글러(Volger) 보이틸라(Voytilla), 그리고 배티(Batty)의 ‘영웅여정 단계’를 분석모델로 활용하여 『오베라는 남자』의 내러티브 구조를 살펴본다.
Abstract
Amongst all the Swedish novels that gained popularity, Fredrik Backman, an unknown writer and his debut novel, A Man called Ove is the one which drew the popular interest in Korea. Above all, the novel has been adapted into the film resulting in a great success. In Korea, the novel and the film have been introduced almost at the same time and earned korean public’s great interest. This study explores how the narrative structure of A Man called Ove was changed and how the change has led to the success of its adaption to film. Even A Man called Ove takes the same structure of 3 acts of superhero’s journey, we encounter an ordinary man’s daily journey to become a hero that is different from Holleywood’s Batman or Superman. This study aims to explore the narrative structure of A Man called Ove through the model of the Hero’s Journey’ of Craig Batty and Christopher Vogler, Stuart Voytilla and Joseph Campbell, under the hypothesis that the structure was led to popular success.
