Abstract

This paper aims at re-illuminating the life and performance of Park Jehaeng, and his status in theatrical performance history. Recordings and data about him are usually written according to writers' private tastes. Consequently it can be said that reliable documents do not exist. This problem led to the distortion of drama history, causing biased interpretations about the actress. Thereupon, this work is to restore Park Jehaeng's life on a basis of objective historical materials, and to reconstruct the trustworthy data about properties of his performance and his theatrical career. Examining the position of Park Jehaeng pioneering the role of an actress in the history of theater, I have found the trouble early actors must have been faced with and problems in the theatrical and cinematical world. This paper reviews the Park Jehaeng's play and theatrical companies. Park Jehaeng's theatrical companies were very diverse. Park Jehaeng was active in theatrical company ‘Towoalhoi Theater’, Yeogeukshijang', ‘Dongyaung Theater’, ‘Chungangmudae’, and ‘Go Hyub Theater’. Go Hyub Theater was organized in 1939 and worked Until 1945. In Korea history, This period is a part of the colonial period. This paper arranges the history of Go Hyub Theater's play and finds out the special feature of it. In conclusion, this paper checks the meaning and significance of Go Hyub Theater's paly in Korean play history. Go Hyub Theater was a dramatic company that was compositively coexisted with Sinkuck(realism play) and Sinpakuck(romanticism play), an Intellectual player and a professional actor. This aspect is particular instance of the varied appearance and characteristic of Korean play. This study will also serve as supplementing some part of the history of actors, which is the weakest point in the Korean dramatical history.
