본고는 서일성의 생애와 연기 그리고 연극사적 위상을 재조명한 논문이다. 서일성에 대한 기록과 자료는 개인적인 취향 의존해 쓰여졌기 때문에, 객관적으로 신뢰할 수 있는 기록이 전무한 상태이다. 이러한 문제점은 연극사의 기술로까지 이어져 배우사의 왜곡을 가져왔다. 이에 본고는 서일성의 생애를 객관적 자료의 도움으로 복원하고, 그 연기 특성과 연기 이력을 신뢰할 수 있는 기록들로 재구하였다. 선구자적 입장에 놓여있던 이경설의 연극적 위상을 고찰하면, 초창기 배우들이 겪어야 했던 고난과 연극영화계의 문제점을 발견할 수 있다. 또 이러한 연구는 한국 연극사의 가장 취약점인 배우사의 한 단면을 보완하는 효과를 가져 올 것이다.
Abstract
This paper aims at re-illuminating the life and performance of Seo Il-seong, and his status in theatrical performance history. Recordings and data about him are usually written according to writers' private tastes. Consequently it can be said that reliable documents do not exist. This problem led to the distortion of drama history, causing biased interpretations about the actress. Thereupon, this work is to restore Seo Il-seong's life on a basis of objective historical materials, and to reconstruct the trustworthy data about properties of her performance and her theatrical career. Examining the position of Seo Il-seong pioneering the role of an actress in the history of theater, I have found the trouble early actors must have been faced with and problems in the theatrical and cinematical world. This study will also serve as supplementing some part of the history of actors, which is the weakest point in the Korean dramatical history.
