야생동물과 관련된 이야기나 작품들 가운데 호랑이처럼 많이 대두되는 것도 드물다. 부정적인 측면에서 뿐만 아니라 긍정적인 측면에서도 말이다. 그런 호랑이도 표범도 남한의 경우는 씁쓸하게도 더 이상 발견되지 않고 있다. 자연현상에 의해서가 아니라 인간에 의해 야기된 현상이다. 이는 생태민주주의를 위해서도, 풍부한 이야기나 작품의 소재를 위해서도 아쉬운 일이다. 이를 복원하기 위해서는 야생생태계에서의 복원과 복제기술에 의한 복원이 있을 수 있다. 복원 후에는 서식지환경조성과 더불어 수렵금지와 같은 철저한 법집행이 요청된다. 무엇보다도 호랑이를 보호하기 위해서는 우리민족의 잘못된 보신문화가 없어져야 한다. 이런 보신문화는 전 세계에 있는 호랑이를 보호하기 위해서도 필요하다. 전 세계에 있는 호랑이들이 사라지는 주요한 원인 가운데 하나가 한국인들의 빗나간 보신문화에 기인한다는 점을 주목해야 한다. 다행히 북한에는 아직도 몇 마리의 호랑이가 야생상태에서 생활하는 것으로 보고되기도 한다. 호랑이나 표범을 두려움의 대상으로 너무 부정적인 측면에서 바라보는 것도 시정해야 한다. 물론, 그런 짐승들은 맹수이다. 그러므로 그런 짐승들을 복원하는 일은 국민적인 합의가 이루어질 필요가 있다. 생태민주주의나 생명공동체라는 처지에서 보면 그런 짐승들도 다시 우리의 산하에서 살 권리가 있지만, 인간중심주의 사상이 뿌리 깊은 우리의 현재 상황에서는 그 반론이 만만치 않을 것으로 여겨진다. 그러므로 국민들에게 여러 동물들이 함께 살 수 있는 생태민주주의 사상을 확산시킬 필요가 있다. 우리나라는 사람들만의 나라는 아니기 때문이다.
Abstract
This paper is divided into five parts. Part 1 is an introduction detailing the purpose, significance, and scope of the study. Part 2 is the kinds, characteristics, and geographical distribution of tigers. Part 3 is the images or roles of tigers in the old tales or literary works. Part 4 is the methods and problems of restorations. The roles of tigers in ecological culture or democracy are also examined in Part 4. In part 5, concluding thought is presented. The ancestors of tigers arrived in the Korean peninsular about nine or ten thousands years ago. Tigers have been, on the whole, peacefully lived with people since they arrived in Korea. Tigers have played an important role in the old tales or literary works. Their images are not always violent and negative. They have been sometimes the symbols of intrepidity and righteousness. People sometimes regarded tigers as the objects of worship. However, lots of situations have been changed since the foundation of Chosun dynasty in 1392 A. D. The ideology of the new dynasty is focused on the safety or welfare of the people. The ruling groups stressed on anthropocentrism as well as humanism. They attempted systematic effort to eliminate the animals such as tigers and leopard. Japanese colonists also had made efforts to eliminate the animals since 1910. Unfortunately tigers have not been founded in South Korea since 1922. In the case of leopards, the situation is almost same. The restorations of tigers or leopards are required in Korea. The human-tiger relationships have lasted for a long time, although their images sometimes do not win a person's favor. The serious problems are not caused by tigers or leopards, but humans. We should be responsible for their living in Korea. Tigers or leopards should have their rights to live without dangers in Korea. Environmental ethics is realized in the ecological democracy as well as ecological culture. Humans should not become any longer a tyrannical ruler in the ecological world. We, Koreans, should keep in mind the facts that we destroyed the human-tiger relationship and eliminated completely tigers in South Korea. However, Korea is the land not only for human beings but also tigers. Korea should be also become a kind of bio-community.
