Abstract
In summary, this study presents the following key points: First, the concept of the modern pamphlet has remained ambiguous, but it can be provisionally defined as “a non-periodical printed material made of 1 to 48 pages of paper with simple binding,” and “even booklets exceeding 48 pages during the modern period may be included if they are simply bound.” Second, modern pamphlets, as primary sources, possess historical value and potential for research across nearly all fields-politics, economy, society, culture, religion, and the arts. This paper demonstrates this by presenting approximately 70 pamphlets from the Japanese colonial period, examining them from political, economic, social, and cultural perspectives. Third, pamphlets from the Japanese colonial era exhibit inherent issues such as ideological bias, the influence of censorship and policing systems, the nature of ephemera (materials intended for temporary use), the problem of readership largely composed of Japanese individuals, intentional distortion or misrepresentation, and incomplete bibliographic information. Therefore, comparative analysis with other sources is necessary. Fourth, pamphlets also carry paradoxical characteristics in which factual accuracy may be of secondary importance, and negative aspects such as serving as instruments of violence and war, discrimination and contempt, and indifference or neglect of historical truth. Thus, they should not be viewed merely as tools of propaganda or publicity.
