Abstract

This study analyzes differences in research productivity based on funding sources. To achieve this, a unique project-level dataset was constructed using data on research projects conducted at the Korea Institute of Science and Technology (KIST) over a 15-year period from 2007 to 2021. Research funding was used as the input variable, while research outputs such as papers, patents, and technology transfer income were used as outcome variables. The aim was to calculate the exact time required for research outputs to be generated from the project initiation and to identify factors influencing differences in productivity. The time-lag analysis between inputs and outputs revealed that SCI(E) papers took an average of 0.94 years, while papers published in the top 1% of journals according to the Clarivate Journal Citation Reports (JCR) took an average of 1.1 years. Patent applications took 1.13 years, patent registrations 2.96 years, and technology transfer income 4.17 years. An analysis by funding source indicated that institutional projects funded by government grants outperformed all types of contract-based projects. Among research cost components, net research costs, remuneration costs, and indirect costs were found to have a statistically significant positive impact on research productivity. This empirical study highlights the importance of stable research funding and long-term project-level data in improving research performance.
