Abstract
The Pāli chroniclers closely related their religion with politics. According to the Chronicles, rulers justified their political positions underthe pretense of preserving religious purity and emphasizing their amicablerelationship with the monastery. The later Pāli texts, the Commentariesand Chronicles provided Abhidhamma references for this connection. The Abhidhamma was used for the elevation of individuals toruler-status, and for binding the Mahāvihāra to powerful rulers. In thelate Pāli texts, the Abhidhamma books became associated with the rulersof Laṅkā, who patronized the Mahāvihāra fraternity. The episodes of later Pāli texts, for example, eight monks came toDuṭṭhagāmaṇī Abhaya and recited the Yamaka, the sixth Abhidhammabook, for him when he had not slept for a month after a triumph;Kassapa V wrote the seven Abhidhamma books on gold-plates,ornamenting with various jewels; Vijaya Bahu worshiped theDhammasaṅgani, the first Abhidhamma book - elevated the rulers to sageking status, as one who protects and develops the Buddha’s supremeteaching. This insured that they protected and supported the Mahāvihārafraternity. Therefore we can come to the conclusion that the chroniclermentioned Abhidhamma for highlighting that the rulers were devotees of Mahāvihāra.
