High speed packet data service over one CDMA carrier has been introduced in IS-2000 standard from Release C. The opportunistic scheduling in which only the user in a good channel condition is served is implemented in the forward (from base station to mobile station) link while the backward compatibility is preserved. Combined with the link adaptation and the AAIR (Asynchronous Adaptive Incremental Redundancy) retransmission strategy, the forward link radio resources are efficiently used. On the reverse link, high speed data service is expected to be included from Release D of IS-2000. By employing an efficient rate control scheme with the H-ARQ strategy, the throughput of the reverse link is improved.
