In this paper, an efficient, fast forward power control scheme where power control bits are utilized to estimate the forward power. In a DS-CDMA system such as IS-95, power control bits are transmitted in the forward link for the fast reverse power control at a fixed rate. Although the power control bits represent polarity for increase or decrease of the transmission power, the SNR of a power control bit is equivalent to that of a pilot channel bit having the same power. So, power control bits can play the same role as the pilot channel symbols in measuring the power. In some systems introduced later for IMT-2000, the position of a power control bit in a power control group is usually randomized to average out the interference. And then the power measurement by power control bits is performed quasi-periodically while the power measurement by pilot channel symbols can be made periodically. Simulation reveals that the performance degradation by this quasi-periodicity is negligible enough to validate the proposed fast forward power control scheme.
