Abstract
This study examines the anatomy theater of the early-modern Netherlands as popular media, focusing on how it mediated medical science with a public taste for a spectacle. This study examines group portraits that present the physicians engaged in the performance of the anatomy theater. The group portraits suggest the anatomy theater’s widespread appeal in that the subjects, the physicians, chose to be represented against the background of the anatomy theater. However, the solemn and grave atmosphere they embody in the group portraits is unfaithful to the reality of the anatomy theater where people of all social standings had a clamorous gathering. While acknowledging that the group portraits manifest scientific spirit underlying the anatomy theater, this study argues that this traditional view risks overlooking how the anatomy theater originated in the social context and how the general public responded to it. This study attempts to restore the spectatorship that anatomy theaters would have evoked by examining how citizens consumed anatomy theaters as well as exhibitions and performances of similar kinds. Three conclusions are drawn from this analysis: first, not only did the anatomy theater function as an educational arena where scientific experiments and lectures were provided, but it also formed collections and organized exhibitions, prefiguring today's museums; second, the anatomy theater prompted spectators to reflect on the meanings of life and death, guiding them to religious repentance; third, the anatomy theater satisfied the participants’ cannibalistic desire as it was often an occasion for a great festivity.
