미술사 서적 대중화의 명(明)과 암(暗): 어린이를 위한 한국미술사 서술을 중심으로

Abstract

The purpose of this thesis is to check the tendency of children’s book about art, especially about Korean art history. To understand the flow and current status in a chronological order, we can pay attention beforehand to biographies of artists such as Kim, Hongdo and Sin, Saimdang. Building on these biographies, publishing translated art history books for children from overseas accelerated the publication about Korean art history for children around 1995. By the 2000’s, more professional art books for children were published as a series, and it gradually expanded to various genres and forms. Meanwhile, characteristics of children’s art history books can be examined as a correlation of curriculum, with awareness on modern trend of interdisciplinary approach to other subjects including mathematics. Despite of these diverse forms, presentation of Korean art is concentrated on only a certain genre, while the attention of marketplace is focused on genre paintings, which can be academically related with the subject of social studies and history. It may be possible for children to eventually end up identifying Korean traditional art with genre paintings that are relatively exposed more frequently. Thus, this thesis attempts to understand and meticulously approach the current publishing circumstances focusing on narrative about Kim, Hongdo, a single subject which has drawn attention of most art historic narrative, as the main case. This process forewarns of the bright side of art history popularization boom that bought drastic increase in publication, and the shadow behind it – that of inappropriate historical research that blurs the line between history and fiction.
