Abstract

Sedimen characteristics in bedrock rivers have not been studied systematically. Sediment size changesand particle shape changes of the sediment particles from River Etive, Western Grampian Highland, Scotland aresurveyed and reported. It is found that sediment fining in bedrock river is rapid than those of reported alluvial rivers (Dx = 0.133 exp(-0.0002x)). Abrasion test with standard LA tumbling mill suggests that only 10% of downstream fining in studied reachcan be explained with abrasion. It is also suggested by physical modelling that diminishment of particles occur by removalof weathering rind and break of particles. Sediment grains from the pothole have higher sphericity and Corey shapeindex than those from bar and channel bed. Intensive abrasion of sediment particles by collision against inner wall ofpothole and other sediment particle are responsible for high roundness.
