Abstract
This study examines the history of modern advertising in American society with emphasis on social and economic background, the way women are defined primarily as consumers as opposed to men, and the persuasive appeals advertising adopting targeting particularly to women. The analysis show that the women in American advertising in 1920s and 1930s are described as capable and wise consumers with buying power of her own, but her power is always within the reach of male dominance of the household. In a similar vein, women's liberation in advertising is realized in the form of consuming particular products, such as cigarettes which used to be consumed by men only. In their relationship with other gender, women are represented as always in search of men's attention and gaze and the advertising message make it public to discuss the physical problems of women such as odors or skin problems. This leads to shame and fear of social isolation for women promoting the consumption of mass produced products of industrialized society. For married women, advertising provokes guilty feelings by emphasizing that all the problems that happen to a child, such as poor health, poor academic performance, is due to the neglect of mother, which can deserve criticism from the other "successful" mothers. In conclusion, the advertising message used both autonomous free women who successfully cope with the changes in modern society as well as traditional and vulnerable women who seek for male approval and peer approval for their position as attractive lady and mother.
