Abstract
As the complexity and hybridization of tactics in recent K-League matches intensify, there is a growing need for analytical methodologies capable of quantitatively capturing tactical continuity and uncertainty beyond singular tactical definitions. This study quantified tactical types and mixing patterns within the league using match data from the 2021–2024 K-League seasons. Specifically, pass-related compositional variables were transformed into isometric log-ratio (ILR) coordinates, followed by soft clustering using the Fuzzy C-Means (FCM) algorithm.Based on the optimal number of clusters (=3), the analysis revealed statistically significant differences between clusters in key variables, including ball possession, pass completion rate, and ILR axes. The derived clusters were categorized into ‘Balanced’, ‘Possession-Dominance’, and ‘Direct Play’ styles. At the team level, patterns of tactical maintenance or transition across seasons were observed. The distribution of normalized entropy for match-level memberships indicated a prevalence of medium-to-high entropy samples, suggesting that the mixing of multiple tactics is more common than adherence to a single tactical style. Furthermore, a time-series comparison between soft cluster memberships and hard label ratios confirmed that soft clustering offers a methodological advantage over hard clustering in preserving the continuity of tactical mixing and the uncertainty inherent in boundary samples.
