초록

This paper aims to build on the scholarship regarding Stevens’ relationship to surrealism in poems such as “The Man with the Blue Guitar” and Notes toward a Supreme Fiction. While many readers consider Stevens an arid, cerebral poet focused on his private symbols, there is much evidence that Stevens strived to stay in contact with contemporary ideas such as surrealism. Such ideas were simply a part of contemporary culture, and another part of the general atmosphere in which people live. More importantly for this paper, however, is the argument that Stevens tried to stay in contact with the phenomenal world, of which surrealism was a part. This article makes the case that not only did Stevens absorb Breton’s ideas, he also goes beyond them to broaden the notion of surrealism so that the discovery of real—the world beyond the mind—is itself a kind of surreality, and deserving to be classified as an instance of “the Marvelous.”
