Abstract

Utilizing a panel dataset of TOEFL iBT scores and KOF Index ofGlobalization of 64 countries for the period of 2006-2012, this paperinvestigates how globalization influences the variation of proficiency inthe use of English as a second language. The regression results suggestthat as a country becomes more globalized, the English proficiency of itspeople improves. In particular, "social globalization" as represented by theuse of internet is the most important factor of globalization in influencingEnglish proficiency. This paper also finds that economic globaization (interms of actual flows of international trade and trade restrictions) andpolitical globalization have a positive association with speaking andwriting skills of English. Therefore, English proficiency level will continueto improve as globalization process continues.
