Abstract

The result of the study on the semantic functions of synonyms “Zehi,” “kitto,” and “kanarazu” is asfollows. “Zehi” represents the following meanings at once according to its semantic function: desire anddemand, request and demand, suggest and demand, and desire and will. Order, certainty, will, andconfident guess are the four semantic functions to express the meaning of “kitto.” Demand, certainty, will,confident guess, and constancy represents the five semantic functions of “kanarazu.”While semantic functions certainty, will, and confident guess remain the common denominators of thethree words, “kanarazu” holds the strongest semantic function. Also, due to subjectivity and objectivitythat remains in the words, there exists difference in the matter of degree between “kitto” and “kanarazu.”
