황석영 소설 『장길산』의 TV드라마 <장길산>으로의 변용 양상 연구

황석영의 『장길산』은 한국의 대표적인 대하 역사소설 중 하나이다. 신문에 연재될 당시부터 많은 인기를 끌었고, 그 여파로 드라마 제작까지 이루어졌다. 그런데 드라마로 각색되고 연출될 경우 원작과는 다른 여러 가지 특징이 발생하게 된다. 따라서 이 연구는 드라마로 방영된 <장길산>이 원작 역사소설과 다른 부분을 분석하고, 그 특징들이 지니는 의미와 가치에 대하여 짚어보고자 한다. 드라마 <장길산>에서는 프롤로그를 애니메이션으로 만들고, 초반에 반복해서 자유의 가치에 대해 강조한다. 그리고 전투 장면을 1회부터 전면에 내세워 액션 신에 비중을 둔 드라마임을 보여준다. 무엇보다 주인공의 어린 시절 이야기를 창작 연출하면서 새로운 인물들을 만든다. 원작에는 없는 이러한 특징들은 시청층을 두텁게 하고 인물의 행적에 설득력을 부여하는 장점이라고 할 수 있다. 한편, 여성 인물들이 지나치게 성적 대상이 되고 폭력을 당하며 목숨을 잃는 장면이 반복되는 점은 가장 비판에 직면할 문제이다. 활빈도가 일으킨 거사가 실패한 후 장길산이 생포되는 비극적인 결말도 문제이다. 조연들의 서사도 마무리하지 않았다. 아무리 드라마가 주인공 중심으로 연출된다고 하여도 이 결말은 특히 영웅 한 사람만을 부각하는 것처럼 보이게 한다. 원작에서는 에필로그에 영웅주의를 상쇄시키는 메시지를 담았다. 모두가 미륵이며 진인이라는 메시지인데, 그 부분이 드라마에서는 생략되었다. 역사소설의 연구만큼이나 역사드라마의 연구도 중요한 가치를 지닌다. 본 연구는 역사드라마 <장길산>을 원작 소설과 비교 분석함으로써 원작 소설의 매체 변용 연구와 역사드라마 연구의 일부로서 의의를 지닌다.
Abstract
Hwang Seok-young’s Jang Gil San is one of Korea’s leading feature-length historical novels. It became very popular from the time it was published in the newspaper, and in the aftermath, drama production took place. However, when it is adapted and directed as a drama, various characteristics that are different from the original work occur. Therefore, this study aims to analyze the different parts of “Jang Gil San”, which was broadcast as a drama, from the original historical novel, and to examine the meaning and value of the characteristics. In the drama “Jang Gil San”, the prologue is animated, and the value of freedom is repeatedly emphasized in the beginning. In addition, the battle scene is put on the front page from the first episode, showing that it is a drama that focuses on the action scene. Create and direct the main character’s childhood story and create new characters. These characteristics that are not in the original work are the advantages of attracting viewers and giving persuasion to the behavior of the character. On the other hand, the repeated scenes of female characters becoming excessively sexual objects, being abused, and losing their lives are the most problem to face criticism. Another problem is the tragic end of Jang Gil San’s capture after the big event caused by “Hwalbindo” failed. The supporting actors’ narratives were not finished either. No matter how much the drama is directed around the main character, this ending makes it seem that only one hero in particular is important. In the original, the epilogue contains a message that offsets heroism. It is a message that everyone is Mireuk and Jinin, but that part was omitted from the drama. The study of historical dramas is as important as the study of historical novels. This study is meaningful as a study of media transformation of the original novel by comparing and analyzing the drama <Jang Gil San> with the original, and is also meaningful as part of the study of historical dramas.
