Abstract
Russian urban art became widely known beyond Russia mostly for its sensational, rough, and anti-government aspects. Although these aspects do characterize many Russian artworks, such discourses neglect and reduce their other values and merits. This paper identifies alternative discourses present in two cases of urban art that utilized the double-leaf bascule bridges across the Neva River in St. Petersburg, Russia: <The Exhibition on Palace Bridge> by Leningrad underground artists in 1990 and <Dick Captured by the FSB> by the radical art group Voina in 2010. The two works exemplify the temporality and site-specificity that define the street art genre and originally distinguished it from other traditional types of art. Even if read as political art, the drawbridge artworks benefit from going beyond anti-government messages and drawing on Rancière’s concept of the “distribution of the sensible.” In particular, Voina’s work, despite its notoriety as a wild and rough performance, not only brilliantly engages with the urban environment and history, but also removes a boundary between art and politics. As a result, the two drawbridge artworks are good examples to challenge both the dominant discourses found in English that only focus on sensationalism and anti-Putinism, and the dominant conservative discourses found in Russian that spread through mainstream media that devalue its aesthetic values as an artwork.
