Abstract
The purpose of this study was to investigate the characteristics of sexual offenders through comparisons between first sexual offenders, sexual recidivists and first general criminals, general recidivists on rape myth, empathy, everyday sadism, and PID-5. For this, statistical analysis was performed on 40 first sexual offenders, 23 sexual recidivists, 49 first general criminals, and 22 general recidivists in prison. Results revealed that there was no significant difference statistically in rape myth, empathy except for perspective taking subdomain between first sexual offenders, sexual recidivists and first general criminals, general recidivists. However, sexual offenders showed significantly statistically higher scores than general criminals in the total of everyday sadism, verbal sadism. In addition, in vicarious sadism, the interaction effect between the number of crime(first offender/recidivist) and the crime name(sexual offense/general crime) was statistically significant. In PID-5, sexual offenders showed significantly statistically higher scores than general criminals in the facets of emotional lability, anxiousness, restricted affectivity, hostility, and separation insecurity in the negative affectivity domain. There was no statistically significant difference in detachment, antagonism, and psychoticism domain. However, sexual offenders showed significantly statistically higher scores than general criminals in the facet of impulsivity in the disinhibition domain. Based on the results of this study, I discuss the significance of everyday sadism and PID-5 on sexual offense, consider limitations of this study, and make suggestions for the future research.
