Abstract
This study aimed to validate the reliability and validity of the ‘Elderly Postural Control Assessment Tool’, which was developed based on daily life activities related to falls, specifically focusing on tasks like getting up from a lying position and walking with obstacles. To achieve this goal, we examined the classification agreement, classification accuracy, criterion validity, and appropriateness of the scoring criteria among 145 elderly women aged 65 and above. Firstly, the classification agreement ranged from 0.895 to 0.964, confirming the reliability of the repeated evaluations. Secondly, the classification accuracy was between 0.672 and 0.700, verifying the validity of the evaluation classification. Thirdly, a high criterion validity was confirmed with correlations ranging from |0.792 to 0.866| between the fall risk scores measured by the criterion test and the scores from the developed assessment tool. Lastly, the ROC curve analysis was conducted to verify the appropriateness of the scoring criteria for the developed assessment tool. Both tasks, getting up from a lying position (AUC=0.937, p=0.001) and walking with obstacles (AUC=0.852, p=0.001), confirmed the appropriateness of the scoring criteria. The Postural Control Assessment Tool developed in this study is expected to provide objective information to predict falls in the elderly and can be utilized in conjunction with various research variables targeting the elderly population.
