Abstract
The purpose of this study was to phenomenologically investigate the meaning of the professional identity of married female social workers working at elderly care facilities as providers of care services. For data collection, a total of five social workers in elderly welfare settings, who met the participant selection criteria, were recruited, and all of them engaged in in-depth, one-on-one conversations about the research topic, meeting an average of more than three sessions. To following the analytical method proposed by Giorgi (1985), the oral data were analyzed according to the procedures of descriptive phenomenological qualitative research. The results revealed that participants’ perceptions and experiences of their professional identity were identified in 13 emerging themes and 4 essential themes. In the end, the central theme identified was ‘social workers who are married women and fulfill the true meaning of their lives in the care of the elderly by exercising more familiar gender roles.’ Lastly, the study presented social welfare-level discussion points on supporting the professional life of married female social workers in elderly welfare settings and enhancing the job satisfaction of the elderly care facility workers.
