Abstract

This study aims at seeking how to secure local community inclusion for multicultural families in Daegu and Gyeongbuk regions. Even though multicultural families have been continuously increased in Daegu and Gyeongbuk regions, there are difficulties in their settlement as our community's members. In addition, in spite of multicultural backgrounds including languages for their children, they are living as the marginalized rather than the members in our community. For these reasons, first, it is limitation of socio-cultural adjustment. Marriage immigrants' social participation is low. And lack of social adjustment education and cultural facilities, passive features of marriage immigrant women and higher expectation toward Korean men are some of these limitations. Second, it is economic poverty. It is derived from low income of Korean husbands and low employment rate of marriage immigrant women in multicultural families. Third, it is low rate of participation in economic activities. Many marriage immigrant women work in service jobs and simple labors, and social prejudice and discrimination are factors to impair their employment. Fourth, it is lack of educational programs. There are few systematic education and training, and educational programs are run fragmentarily. Finally, conflicts and lack of understanding in family life and marital relations are also impairing factor for integrating multicultural families into local community. For the policy suggestions, first, it is necessary to set value system and goals of multicultural policies, Second, it is required to secure efficiency and expertise of multicultural policies and programs. Third, the relevance of the content of multicultural policies and programs should be enhanced. Fourth, it is necessary to provide customized services according to demographic features of multicultural families. Finally, it is needed to improve access to multicultural policies and programs, and to enhance the results evaluations.
