초록

This study investigates some of Shakespeare’s plays by means of linguistic theory argued by sociologist Pierre Bourdieu. Bourdieu insists that any kind of linguistic study should not be an analysis on Language itself as an abstract object detached from its context. For him, language is the artificial construct that speakers utilize to realize their specific interests in their actual life. Bourdieu newly invented several influential concepts in linguistics such as habitus, field, and symbolic capital. Bourdieu disclosed that he got some inspiration of his linguistic theory from Shakespeare and sometimes explained his theory depending on some scenes of Shakespeare’s plays. This paper aims at illuminating how Shakespeare had a keen insight in the relationship between the power or various symbolic capitals and voice potential in our linguistic practice focusing on Othello, King Lear and Measure for Measure.
